I am running MSI K8NGM2-FID with an HP DVD Writer 740b. Neither the 64 bit nor the 32 bit versions will boot from the DVD.

Disks won't boot
Does other operating system disks boot like xp or win98? Check your bios settings for booting from cd. If that wont help try either a) try different drive b) different disc image (maybe burning options?) c) update drive firmware.

I can boot from the Windows XP disk. It seems to be something about DVD disks or the Vista disks.
Once I tried to install from Windows rather than booting, the system went into a loop at the booting. I think that it had something to do with the boot.ini file but it was late last night. Once I was able to boot from the XP CD i was able to get into Windows XP 64 and run that. I am afraid that I hosed my regular XP installation. Oh well.

Are they bootable DVDs?

I purchased them from Microsof as part of the beta release program.

My system also will not boot from the DVD drive. It can boot from the cd drive, but not the DVD drive. I have yet to come across a solution to the problem. I also have the downloaded version of vista as well as the one I ordered from Microsoft and either one will boot to the DVD drive. Swap drives. Many will not boot from the Slave drive. Swap their position on the cable. On a Dell, they should be jumpered Cable Select anyway. "ZenFire" wrote in message

I have the PHILIPS DVD+/-RW, 16X. I would love to figure out how to boot to it. It seems simple enough, but I have as of yet figured out a way.... -- Vista 64 bit OS Dell Precision 670 Intel Xeon 3.6G X2 SCSI hard drive 15k X2 Adaptec Perc 320 controller NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400

Can you please confirm that your Device Manager shows no problems with your HP DVD Writer 740b.
My HP DVD Writer 740b is not recognized by Windows Vista. My Device Manager shows "This device can not start".
When I check for solutions to fix the problem, the following error occurs:
Description: Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 10.
